MAHADEVI KANNADA SERIAL EPISODES SERIAL
“I was pleasantly shocked - people could see me as a director!”Ĭasting for the serial was another milestone.

When Ramesh told him the scene had been directed by Shruti, Gundkal offered her independent direction of another new serial. And he said, ‘Okay, why not?’.” That scene turned out to be 9 minutes long, and was appreciated by the then channel’s head, Parameshwar Gundkal. “I don’t know with what guts I asked him that question. She was reading a 6-page scene on the sets and asked Ramesh if she could direct the scene. I asked myself - would I be able to do that? The answer was ‘no’.”Įven as these thoughts were swirling around in Shruti’s mind, a major shift came while she was assisting director Ramesh Indira with production in a serial called Nammamma Sharade. I knew they would eventually lead to the role of a mother. “I understood that the roles on offer did not give much opportunity for artistic exploration. She began to play various roles, but realised that she needed something more challenging. Numerous offers began to come her way after Preethi. “That’s when it struck me that people were taking me seriously.”

That TV serial went on to become a huge hit, and Shruti drew applause for daring to accept the role of a wife to an older actor. Soon after this 1-year cookery show project, Shruti received an offer to play a major role in Preethi Illadha Mele, starring as Anant Nag’s wife. I realised the huge potential for growth in this field.” “And for a person who used to earn Rs 1,000 or 2,000 once in a while - I started earning Rs 70,000 to 80,000 a week. She soon began delivering an entire month’s quota of shows in just a week, and grew from being an anchor to the director of the show. ETV went on giving me chances to work independently. I later started designing the sets, and inviting completely different guests for the show. “This was a bit tricky since I had never ever cooked anything at home. It was at this point that she got the offer to host a cookery show on a Kannada TV channel. I was determined not to take any financial help from my parents.” She also assisted well-known TV commercials producer M G Sathya. Upon reaching Bengaluru, she did the time-honoured routine of going around distributing her photographs to various people in the entertainment industry. So she was optimistic that she would get an opening somewhere. Her father Janardhana Naidu, a bank manager, had done some film distribution work, while her mother Susheela Belawadi, also a bank manager, was related to theatre, television and film director Prakash Belawadi. “I was kind of a rebel - I wanted to go out and achieve something different.” When she was doing her Mechanical Engineering, she decided to give it up and go to Bengaluru to see what she could do in the world of entertainment. She felt she was not getting enough attention. An only child, Shruti describes her childhood years in Mysore as ‘disturbed’, with both parents away working during the day. Sunday Herald met her recently at her spacious studio-cum-residence in Bengaluru. A video editor I was speaking to described her as ‘the Ekta Kapoor of Kannada serials’. The engineering college drop out from Mysuru is today a success story. Over a decade ago, she was just another young woman who came to Bengaluru in search of her dreams.

One of the top-ranking directors of Kannada television serials today, with 3 hit shows on the air at the moment: Shri Asthu Shubham Asthu, Punarvivaha and Mahadevi.
